Paniyeli Poru - Eco tourist distination


If you love nature and want to explore beauty of forest and river Paniyeli Poru is the perfect place to visit. Unlike other distination this place is untouched picnic spot on the outskirts of Kochi, India
.

 The lush green vegetation around Paniyeli Poru is home to numerous species of birds and animals and assures an exotic experience to all visitors. The chirping and twittering of birds, the melody of rivulets and the waterfalls all blend to compose a harmony that would relieve you from all worries. The sight of River Periyar winding its path along the dense forests and rocks is incredible to watch. To those who are into photography, Paniyeli Poru is a not-to-be-missed destination. The canopy of trees, warbling birds, manna - like water.. you will surely be tempted to recapture all the wondrous things in several frames.
Since the location is under the control of Kerala State Forest Department, a pass costing a nominal fee needs to be obtained at the entrance and also a forest guard will guide as to the final spot and will take care of our safety. During monsoon season the current will be strong and swimming will be dangerous. If we you are visiting the place during the summer you can explore the place completely.

There is some disadvantages about this place, basically there won't be much restaurant near this place.

Curd Rice

Curd rice is an extremely preferred south India meal and is in reality a convenience food.It's got several benefits and it is very useful for heart illnesses, digestive system and it is an abundant in Vitamin C and Vitamin B. Curd works as an excellent medicine and possesses an enzyme that keeps the body cool and is a great healer.  Along the way of making curd, bacteria convert milk into curd and predigest milk protein. These bacteria then restrict the expansion of hostile or illness-causing bacteria within the digestive tract and promote helpful bacteria required for digestion. These pleasant bacteria facilitate the absorption of minerals and assisted in the synthesis of vitamins of B group.


Ingredients 
• Green chillies - 1 numbers.
• Ginger - 1 piece.
• Salt - 1 to taste.
• Urad dal - 1 teaspoons.
• Curds - 300 ml.
• Mustard seeds - 1 pinch.
• Rice - 200 grams.
• Curry leaves - 1 springs.
• Oil or ghee - 1 tablespoons.
• Sour cream or fresh cream - 1 cup.
• Hing - 1 pinch.
• Chopped coriander leaves - 1 pinch.
Method:
1. Boil rice, adding salt. cool slightly.
2. mix with curds
3. chop green chillies and ginger fine.
4. Heat oil. fry mustard seeds urad dal cumin and asafoetida.
5. add curry leaves and chopped ingredients. saute for 2 minutes
6. Switch off the fire and add the rice curds mixture to the pan
7. mix well. serve with with pickles.

Thommankuthu Waterfalls, Idukki

Those who love to visit places with waterfalls, heavy streams, and natural beauty, then Thommankuthu is the best place where you can see all three at one place.
Thommankuthu waterfalls is located in Idukki District of Kerala State. It comes under Kerala Forest Department, Kothamangalam Division, Kaliyar Range. Kannadiyaru is the name of the river flowing through Thommankuthu. It starts 20kms inside the Plakkulam forest area and flowing through the Kaliyar forest.
There are three main waterfalls in Thommankuth. For the first waterfall one should walk 600m from the entrance, next is 1km far from the first waterfall.  The last one called Ezhunilakuthu. There are few waterfalls above the Ezhunilakuthu, but to see that one need to walk again quite a distance which would be stressful. The authorities have built a wooden watch tower which is quite useful for the bird watchers.
It is believed that the name “Thommankuthu” derived from one tribal leader “Thumban” who was washed away in the river. Main attraction of the river is the chain of waterfalls and mysterious caves. During the Monsoon Season in Kerala, one could see both the beauty and the rage of the river.
Kerala Forest Department has arranged all basic facilities for the tourists in Thommankuthu. Visitors will be greeted by the reception, which is being managed by local staff. An entry ticket is required for the entry in the Forest. It is available in the counter and entry ticket fee is Rs 20 per adults and Rs 10 for the children. After entering in the forest, there is one interpretation centre available where all the details about the forest, spotting of animals etc are given by the staff.
The best time to visit Thommankuthu is from Jun to Nov. Thommankuthu is an uprising tourist attraction and a splendid place to visit. This place is not idle for visit during summer time when the river bed is dry from Feb to May.
The waterfall and stream is live after the monsoon in Kerala. During the heavy monsoon time, the river overflows and the three waterfalls become live.  Bathing, crossing the river etc are completely banned during Jun and Jul.
       Eco Tourism Centre set up by Kerala Forest Department provides trekking facilities.   A tourist guide will be provided.Trekking starts at 9am and available till 5pm.  Common spotting during the trekking are –  wild elephants, goats, sambar, largest butterfly, Draco – dragon tailed flying lizard etc.  Trekking can be booked in advance or on reaching at the place.There is only one budget resort at Thommankuthu. A small river also flowing in front of the resort.To reach Thommankuthu, one need to reach Thodupuza town.

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • 4 cups finely shredded red cabbage
  • 1½ cups  carrots
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
  • 3 tablespoons toasted sliced almonds
  • 2½ tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • Preparation

    1. Whisk vinegar, lemon juice, honey, cumin, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Slowly whisk in oil until well combined. Add cabbage and carrots and toss to coat. Serve topped with cilantro, pomegranate seeds and almonds.

    Biscuit Pudding

    This is an old-fashioned biscuit pudding with vanilla, eggs, and milk. It is a moist and flavorful vanilla bread pudding but made with leftover biscuits instead of bread. 
    Some of you will have fond childhood memories of this pudding, but even if you have never heard of it, you have to appreciate our grandparents' or great-grandparents' creative use of leftover biscuits. And the pudding is delicious!

    Ingredients

    • 4 leftover biscuit, torn into pieces
    • 2 cups milk, divided
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 4 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons butter, melted
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
                 Preparations

    1. Heat the oven to 350 F.
    2. Butter a shallow 2-quart baking dish.
    3. Put the biscuits in a large bowl and add 1 cup of milk. Let stand for about 5 to 10 minutes or until the biscuits have softened.
    4. With a fork, stir in the sugar and one of the eggs, mixing to blend well. Add the remaining eggs, one at a time, mixing after each addition. 
    5. Add the melted butter, vanilla, and the remaining milk and blend well.
    6. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
    7. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the pudding is firm and set. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
    8. Let the pudding cool.
    9. Slice the pudding into squares or wedges and serve with syrup or a dessert sauce.
